There is something cool about building a robot and watching it win.
On Saturday, October 15, the ABS Trobotics team did just that at the Tennessee Valley BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science & Technology) competition held at Calhoun Community College. They won and they won BIG, taking away 5 awards, one of them being the third highest achieving award at the competition. This qualifies them to go on to compete at the BEST regional competition to be held at Auburn University on Saturday, December 3.
They won the following awards:
-
3rd Place for BEST Award (given to the top three teams of the day who have proven to be the best examples for conveying the mission of Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology)
-
1st place - Oral Marketing Presentation
-
1st place - Best Team Web Page Design
-
3rd place - Most Robust Engine (this is for the teams that had to do the least repairs to the robot in between rounds)
-
3rd place - Best Team T-shirt Design
In addition, the Toyota Leadership Award was given to ABS Trobotics coach Craig Adams, which is given to the teacher who best inspires "leadership, teamwork, respect for humanity and continuous improvement" in his or her BEST students.
The TV BEST competition requires students to work together to not only build a robot to accomplish specified required tasks, but also to create a business plan to promote their product.
Scott Hammond, a Trobotics team member said, "Trobotics has helped me tremendously as a student in every way. Not only in technology and engineering, but also in presentation, communication and social skills."
We look forward to the team competing in December at Auburn.
