ABS Takes Two of Three from Marion County
The Area 15 Champion ABS Lady Trojans hosted the Runner Up of Area 12 Lady Raiders from Marion County. In the first game, ABS took a 3 to 1 lead into the 7th inning but Marion County would not give up The Lady Raiders plated 3 runs in the top half of the 7th inning to take a 4-3 lead and would win the first game of the three game series. Abbie Melvin took the loss but did not give up an earned run allowing only four hits with four strike outs. The Lady Trojans committed only three errors but Marion County capitalized on every error. Allie McCurry was the clutch hitter in the first game with a double that drove in two runs and a sacrifice fly that drove in the third run. Katie Eubanks had two hits and scored a run, Emily Irwin had a double and scored a run, and Chelsea Burgess had a single and scored a run. Abbie Melvin and Kerri Pender also had hits in the first game.
Down one game and their backs against the wall, the Lady Trojans would rebound with a 15-2 win in the second game. Abbie Melvin faced twenty-nine batters allowing only 2 runs on 5 hits. The Lady Trojans didn’t spend much time taking control of the second game plating 6 runs in the second inning batting around. ABS added two more runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth with a 9-2 lead going into the top of the seventh. No insurance runs would be needed but the Lady Trojans plated another 6 runs in the top of the seventh. Allie McCurry led the hitting with 3 hits and 4 RBIs. Emily Butler had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBIs. Haley Chittam also had 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Katie Eubank, Abbie Melvin, and Brooke Chittam had 2 hits and 1 RBI each. Kerri Pender added another hit with an RBI.
In the third game, the Marion County Lady Raiders would score first plating two runs in the top of the second inning. ABS would answer in the bottom half of the inning with one run of their own after a double by Brooke Chittam. Kerri Pender bunted for a base hit and Chittam scored on the throw. After a scoreless top half of the third inning, the Lady Trojans led off the bottom half of the third with three straight hits with a lead off single to left center by Allie McCurry followed by a single to left by Abbie Melvin. Christina Ivey just missed a three run homer hitting a double off the left field fence scoring both Allie and Stefanie McClure who went in for Abbie as a courtesy runner. Brooke Chittam reached on a walk and singled to center scoring Ivey. Emily Irwin hit a sacrifice fly to left scoring Brooke Chittam.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Lady Raiders scored another run in the fifth inning after a double by Robertson and an RBI single by Smith. ABS answered with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Kerri Pender singled, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Haley Chittam who reached on an error. Abbie Malone, who went in to courtesy run for Pender, would score on the errant throw to first that ended up in right field. Chelsea Burgess bunted for a hit followed by an RBI sacrifice by Emily Irwin. ABS added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Allie McCurry led off with a single to left and scored on a triple to left center by Brooke Chittam.
The ABS Lady Trojans will host Area 11 Champs Speake on Saturday. The winner of Saturday’s series will advance to Montgomery to play in the
ABS Lady Trojans Win Area Tournament!
The ABS Lady Trojans went undefeated yesterday in the Class 1A Area 15 Tournament hosted by ABS. In the championship game last night the Lady Trojans scored 12 unanswered runs behind a perfect game by Abbie Melvin on the mound. Melvin only faced 18 batters in the NO Hitter with only 3 base runners striking out eight. The defense also played an excellent game.
Kerri Pender led the hitting going 3 for 3 scoring each time and driving in one run. Christina Ivey and Haley Chittam had two hits each with an RBI each. Abbie Melvin had a triple that plated two runs and Chelsea Burgess had a single with 2 RBIs. Katie Eubanks was on base three out of four appearances with a single, a walk and was hit by a pitch. Allie McCurry also had a hit and scored once.
The ABS Lady Trojans advance to sub-state playoffs which they will host next Tuesday.
