Map Skills...SWEET!
This is no ordinary map--it's edible art!
3rd grade students learn about physical maps as they shape and decorate cookie dough to make a map of the United States. First, the cookie dough was shaped to resemble the US. Then, using colored icing, students colored their maps: with green representing the lower grasslands and brown indicating the higher elevations and more arid regions. Next, they used blue icing to fill in the Great Lakes and major rivers across the country. Finally, the students used chocolate chips to build the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains. All in all, the 3rd graders enjoyed this hands-on approach to learning, and they were able to enjoy the sweet rewards of their work when we baked the cookies and ate them for snack! Yummy!
